Health = Damage vs Defense + Repair

From a first principles standpoint, health is simple:

It’s the balance between damage and defense + repair.

Every day, two things are happening at once:

• The body is exposed to things that create damage.

• The body activates resources to neutralize and repair that damage.

When defense stays ahead of damage, the system remains resilient. When damage consistently outpaces defense, the body begins to break down.

This is the foundation of the “Free Radical vs Antioxidant” framework, where:

• Free radicals represent a major form of damage.

• Antioxidants represent the body’s primary line of defense.

What Is a Free Radical?

At its core, a free radical is simply an unstable molecule missing an electron.

Electrons like to exist in pairs, and when a molecule is short one, it becomes reactive - constantly looking to stabilize itself by taking an electron from somewhere else. Think of it like a restaurant table with a missing chair: someone is left standing, looking for a place to sit, so they pull a chair from the next table…

That act of “electron theft” is what creates damage.

One missing chair isn’t a crisis (the servers can adjust), but when chairs keep getting pulled from table to table, the whole room gradually loses order.

Unfortunately, modern life exposes us to a high free radical load.

Some of the most common sources include:

1. Ultra-Processed Foods: Foods made with damaged oils, chemicals, dyes, and preservatives. Think fast food, fried food, and packaged snacks.

2. Pesticides + Dirty Food/Water: Small amounts of chemicals that get into food and water from things like pesticides and plastic. Over time, they add up.

3. Air Pollution + Smoke + Indoor Chemicals: The lungs let things into the body very quickly - what you breathe goes straight into the bloodstream. Examples include car exhaust, smoke, cleaning sprays, perfumes and scented candles.

4. Chronic Psychological Stress: Stress isn’t just “mental” - it changes your body chemistry. Too much stress makes it harder for the body to fix itself.

5. Poor Sleep + Light at Night: The body does a lot of repair while you sleep.
   Bright lights and screens at night shut down that repair.

What Are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are protective molecules that neutralize free radicals.

They work by donating an electron safely - without becoming unstable themselves. Instead of free radicals stealing electrons from your tissues, antioxidants offer one first, stopping the chain reaction.

That said, antioxidant protection isn’t just about taking vitamins or eating “superfoods.” It’s a whole system the body uses to protect itself and fix damage - and that system also needs rest and time to work.

1. Nutrient-Dense Animal Foods: Many helpful foods don’t stop damage directly. Instead, they help the body build the tools it needs to protect and repair itself. Egg yolks help protect cell walls; oysters provide minerals that help repair cells; beef liver gives vitamins and minerals the body uses for protection, etc.

2. Sunlight: Sunlight supports antioxidant capacity by improving circadian rhythm and mitochondrial efficiency. Better-functioning mitochondria leak fewer free radicals to begin with - reducing oxidative stress upstream.

3. Sleep: Sleep is when repair actually happens. Deep sleep restores antioxidant reserves, clears damaged cells, regulates hormones, and supports detoxification.

When Damage Outpaces Defense + Repair

This is where the model becomes especially clear.

Up to this point, we’ve been talking about chemistry at the cellular level, but none of this stays isolated. Free radicals and antioxidants don’t just act inside individual cells - they move through the body in the bloodstream.

And blood, by design, goes everywhere. It reaches the brain, heart, liver, kidneys, glands, joints, and nerves. Anything circulating in blood becomes systemic.

When antioxidant capacity is sufficient, free radicals are neutralized quickly and damage stays contained. When free radicals exceed that capacity, they remain active - circulating, colliding with tissues, and repeating the same injuries over and over.

This state is called oxidative stress:

Oxidative stress simply means that damage is occurring faster than the body can neutralize and repair it. And because blood touches everything, oxidative stress doesn’t stay localized. It shows up as whole-body wear and tear.

When oxidative stress begins to tip the balance, the first signs are often subtle and scattered:

• Brain fog and headaches

• Poor sleep and fatigue or low stamina

• Irritability and mood instability

• Muscle twitching or cramps (often mineral-related)

• Chronic inflammation or pain

• Slower recovery after workouts

• Skin changes (aging, dryness, inflammation)

• Digestive issues

These patterns are signs the body is losing its oxidative balance.

When free radicals stay elevated, small injuries start to build up all over the body:

• Choose organic when possible. Organic foods reduce exposure to pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic chemicals that add to oxidative stress over time. When sourcing is unclear, prioritize foods where chemical load matters most.

• Source food closer to its origin. Directories like EatWild.com and RealMilk.com help you find regenerative farms, grass-fed meat, pastured eggs, and unprocessed dairy - foods that preserve the minerals, enzymes, and fat-soluble nutrients the body uses for repair.

• Use heat intentionally. Incorporating sauna into your weekly rhythm improves circulation, strengthens mitochondrial resilience, and activates detox pathways that help clear the byproducts of oxidative stress.

These aren’t “hacks” or “optimizations.” They’re just fundamental ways of lightening the daily damage burden and increasing the resources your body has for defense, repair, and long-term resilience.

That’s the direction we’ll keep moving in.

It begins quietly, when the body struggles to maintain strong teeth, stable bones, resilient immunity, balanced hormones, and reliable reproduction. These changes are often dismissed as normal aging, stress, or bad luck. In reality, they’re early signs that the body is no longer getting what it needs to repair, rebuild, and sustain itself.

Nearly a century ago, this slow unraveling was documented with unusual clarity and detail by Francis Pottenger Jr. His work didn’t focus on treating disease. It focused on something more fundamental: what happens to a body over time when food is sufficient to keep it alive but inadequate to fully support structure, repair, and reproduction.

Over the course of roughly ten years, Pottenger observed more than 900 cats - across their full lifespans and through multiple generations. What he documented in those cats helps explain why so many people today feel their health slipping, even when they appear to be doing everything “right.”

What the Cats Were Fed

All of Pottenger’s cats were fed enough food to grow and survive. None were starved. Housing and care were identical. The only meaningful difference was how the food was prepared.

One group ate:

• Raw muscle meat, including natural connective tissue and organs

• Raw milk

• Cod liver oil

Another group ate:

• Cooked muscle meat

• Pasteurized milk

• Cod liver oil

On paper, both diets appeared reasonable: calories were available, protein was present, and vitamins were assumed to be covered. But over time, the bodies revealed a truth that nutrition labels could not.

Results: Unprocessed Food Group

The cats fed unprocessed animal foods maintained strength and stability throughout their lives and across generations. Observed findings included:

• Normal body size, strength, and coordination

• Strong bones and stable skeletal structure

• Wide dental arches with straight teeth

• Strong resistance to infections

• Calm behavior and stable temperaments

• High fertility with healthy pregnancies

These cats aged, but they did not progressively fall apart. Their bodies were able to repair, maintain, and reproduce because the inputs required for those processes were consistently present.

Results: Processed Food Group

The first generation fed heat-processed food did not appear dramatically ill. They grew, lived, and functioned - much like many people today. But over time, physical stress began to show up across multiple systems. Observed findings included:

• Increased infections and parasitic illness

The second generation was conceived and raised entirely on cooked food. At this point, physical decline was no longer subtle. Findings included:

• Weakened bones and early arthritis

• Poor growth and reduced body size

• Chronic infections and immune weakness

By the third generation, the system could no longer compensate. Findings included:

There was no single toxin. No dramatic collapse. Just the cumulative effect of food that kept bodies alive while failing to support ongoing repair and renewal. Reproduction stopped because biology could no longer sustain itself.

Attempts at Recovery

When some cats were returned to unprocessed animal foods, improvement did occur - but it unfolded gradually. Physical condition strengthened over time, and fertility partially returned. In some lineages, multiple generations were required before health began to resemble the original baseline.

This mattered. It showed that biology retains a memory of how to build well - but it also works on a longer clock than we tend to expect. Structure, resilience, and reproductive capacity take time to rebuild once they’ve been compromised.

The encouraging part is this: the system remained responsive. When conditions improved, the body recognized them and adjusted. Recovery followed the same rules as development - quiet, cumulative, and shaped by steady support rather than quick fixes.

Seen this way, the study is both a warning and a reassurance. When conditions improve, biology responds, but it does so at the pace required to rebuild what takes time to grow.

Why This Should Matter to You

Pottenger’s work doesn’t tell humans to eat like cats. It shows something more important: biology responds to food based on its ability to support maintenance, repair, and reproduction - not just survival.

Today, many conditions we accept as “normal” mirror what he documented:

Like the early generations of cats, many people still function. They work. They raise families. Lab values may even look acceptable. But resilience is lower. Repair is slower. Degeneration starts earlier.

Pottenger’s cats demonstrate a reality we often resist:

But the mouth isn’t a countertop you wipe down after a meal. It’s living tissue - highly vascular, deeply innervated, and woven directly into the immune system. It’s also the opening act of digestion, where signals begin moving long before anything reaches the stomach.

It’s home to a microbial ecosystem that does more than keep the breath polite. It helps regulate blood flow, metabolism, and chemical signaling throughout the body. When that ecosystem is repeatedly suppressed, you’re not just “freshening things up.” You’re quieting a system that’s meant to stay active and responsive.

This is the tension worth noticing: we treat the mouth like a surface, when it’s actually a signal hub. We sterilize what was designed to be regulated. So how did we end up here - treating something this alive as if the highest form of care were silence?

Let me tell you.

Mouthwash: A Brief History

Mouthwash feels normal, because it’s been framed as hygiene for over a century. It sits in the same mental category as soap and deodorant - an obvious good, rarely questioned. But it didn’t emerge from a careful study of the mouth as a living system. It came from a particular moment in history, when medicine learned something powerful… and then applied it too broadly.

In the 1860s, British surgeon Joseph Lister demonstrated that antiseptics could dramatically reduce surgical infections. The results were undeniable. Lives were saved. Medicine changed almost overnight.

Out of that success came a simple, compelling idea: If germs cause disease, then killing germs produces health.

In the context of surgery - where open wounds and acute infection were the problem - that logic was exactly right. But it also planted a habit of thinking that would spread far beyond the operating room.

A few years later, an American physician named Joseph Lawrence created an alcohol-based antiseptic and named it “Listerine” - a nod to Lister. It wasn’t designed for daily oral care. It was a general disinfectant.

Early uses included surgical antisepsis, floor cleaning, and even treatment for gonorrhea. The goal wasn’t balance or regulation. It was sterilization.

By the 1890s, the Lambert Company began pitching Listerine to dentists as an oral antiseptic. It worked - somewhat. Dentists were cautious. The benefits were modest. The product stayed respectable, useful… and small.

At this stage, mouthwash was still framed as a tool for specific situations, not a universal ritual.

That changed in the 1920s, when Gerard Lambert took Listerine directly to the public and built a national campaign around a newly popularized medical term: halitosis.

The ads didn’t say, “freshen your breath.” They implied something more unsettling:

You are unpleasant.

People are talking about you.

You may never marry...

and only this product can help.

Sales exploded. Mouthwash became a daily habit - not because oral biology had changed, but because the emotional framing had.

First, fear of invisible germs.

Then, fear of social rejection.

Once fear entered the picture, nuance didn’t stand much of a chance.

The problem here wasn’t bad science. It was a narrow idea applied everywhere - one that treated the mouth like a surface to be disinfected, rather than a system to be regulated. And that framing stuck.

The Mouth Is Part of the System

Mouthwash only seems harmless if you imagine the mouth as its own little compartment - a side room you can scrub aggressively without affecting the rest of the house. But that’s not how the body works.

The mouth has a dense blood supply. What touches it touches living tissue. And it sits right at the start of digestion, where inputs move downstream and information loops back upstream. It’s less like a sink you clean and more like a junction - traffic moving in multiple directions at once.

Saliva makes this easier to see.

Saliva is made by glands that pull water and dissolved compounds out of your circulation, then blend them with enzymes, minerals, and protective proteins. In other words, saliva is built from the same internal chemistry that feeds every other organ.

Because of that, it carries a kind of real-time snapshot of what’s happening system-wide - things like:

• stress signals (hormone byproducts and metabolites)

• nutrient status (what’s being absorbed - or not)

• inflammatory chemistry

• immune activity

Here’s the part most people never consider:

You don’t make saliva occasionally and spit it out. You swallow it all day.

So whatever shows up in saliva doesn’t stay in the mouth - it’s sent downstream, again and again. This is why treating the mouth like an isolated surface misses the point. It’s not a dead end - it’s part of a circuit:

1. Blood chemistry builds saliva.

2. Saliva shapes the oral environment.

3. You swallow it, sending that chemistry into digestion.

4. The gut absorbs what it can.

5. Those compounds re-enter circulation.

6. Circulation reshapes saliva again.

Your oral bacteria aren’t just hanging out on teeth, waiting to cause trouble. They’re integrated into this loop, participating in signaling pathways the body actively relies on. When that ecosystem shifts, the signals shift with it.

What Oral Bacteria Actually Do

If all of this still feels abstract, there’s one simple example where the partnership between the mouth and the body becomes hard to ignore. It involves nitric oxide.

Nitric oxide - often shortened to NO - is a signaling molecule your body uses to manage blood flow. It helps blood vessels relax, supports endothelial function, and plays a real role in blood pressure regulation.

Your body can make some nitric oxide on its own, but one of the most important pathways depends entirely on your oral microbiome. Here’s the basic sequence:

1. You eat foods that contain nitrates.

2. Those nitrates enter the bloodstream.

3. Your salivary glands pull them out and concentrate them into saliva.

4. Specific oral bacteria convert nitrate (NO₃) into nitrite (NO₂).

5. You swallow that saliva, and your body converts the nitrite into nitric oxide to support circulation and heart health.

Human cells can’t do this conversion efficiently on their own. Without the right oral bacteria, the pathway stalls - even if your diet is otherwise ideal.

This is one of those quiet partnerships we rarely notice. You feed the system. The bacteria translate the signal. And your physiology benefits downstream.

It’s not contamination. It’s cooperation.

What Gets Broken When We Sterilize

Antiseptic mouthwash isn’t selective. It doesn’t “target bad bacteria.” It suppresses broad groups - including the nitrate-reducing species that make the nitric oxide pathway work. So when you rinse, you don’t just kill germs. You break a link between diet and vascular signaling.

This isn’t hypothetical.

In controlled studies, just one week of twice-daily antiseptic mouthwash reduced nitrite availability and raised systolic blood pressure. In others, suppressing oral bacteria blunted the blood-pressure-lowering effects of nitrate-rich foods - even when people ate the right diet.

Same inputs. Broken processing.

Once you see that, mouthwash stops looking like a harmless cosmetic habit. It starts to look like a daily interruption of a regulatory pathway. So why do we keep using it?

Usually for bad breath. But persistent bad breath is rarely a “dirty mouth” problem. It’s more often a gut problem.

Gut dysbiosis increases fermentation and produces sulfur-based byproducts. Those compounds don’t stay neatly contained in the intestines. They move - via reflux, circulation, and altered saliva chemistry - reshaping the oral environment toward the same odor-producing ecology.

Diet is the primary lever here.

High sugar intake, refined carbohydrates, ultra-processed foods, constant snacking - over time, these keep the system in a fermentative state. Upstream and down. In that context, bad breath isn’t a disease. It’s a signal. And sterilizing signals doesn’t restore balance. It just makes them quieter for a while.

A More Stable Approach

The goal isn’t to sterilize the mouth. It’s to restore the conditions that allow stability.

1. Start with mechanics, not chemistry. Brush well. Clean between teeth. Remove physical buildup without reaching for daily chemical disinfection. A healthy mouth is regulated, not sterile.

2. Then look at the terrain. Chronic inflammation, decay, or persistent odor usually point to a body that’s undernourished or metabolically stressed - not a mouth that needs stronger chemicals. What you feed the system matters more than what you rinse away.

3. Support mineralization from the inside out. Favor nutrient-dense foods that supply the raw materials for repair and resilience: quality animal proteins, eggs, seafood, organs, and mineral-rich traditional foods. Think foundations, not fixes - especially when it comes to fat-soluble nutrients.

4. If you rinse, keep it simple. Salt water is often enough. The aim is to soothe and support the environment, not flatten it.

5. Treat persistent bad breath as information. If it lingers despite good hygiene, look upstream. Reflux, fermentation, and gut imbalance are common drivers. Masking the signal may quiet it for a while - but understanding it is what restores balance.

Marketed as a “tooth-friendly,” “diabetic-safe” sweetener in gum, toothpaste, nasal sprays, and snacks, xylitol is often portrayed as inherently protective. But when you look at how xylitol is made, how it is metabolized, and how it affects organ systems—including the gut, kidneys, and cardiovascular system—a very different picture emerges.

Xylitol belongs to a group of compounds called sugar alcohols (polyols). Structurally, it sits between a sugar and an alcohol, which allows it to trigger sweet taste receptors on your tongue while mostly escaping digestion in the upper GI tract. In practical terms, xylitol:

• Tastes sweet

• Has fewer calories than sucrose

• Produces a smaller insulin response than regular sugar

It’s also true that xylitol appears in trace amounts in the fibrous parts of some fruits and vegetables, and that our bodies generate tiny amounts of it as a byproduct of normal glucose metabolism.

But this is where the “natural” story becomes misleading.

The fact that your body makes minute, incidental amounts of xylitol does not mean that large, repeated doses are beneficial - or harmless. And the xylitol added to toothpaste, gum, and “sugar-free” snacks is nothing like a natural plant compound, despite how it’s marketed.

If you’ve heard xylitol referred to as “birch sugar,” you’re hearing a story rooted in its early history. Some of the earliest commercial batches of xylitol were produced from birch wood, which helped create the perception of a clean, Scandinavian, naturally sourced sweetener.

Modern xylitol is very different.

Today, manufacturers typically start with xylan-rich plant waste, most commonly corn cobs or hardwood scraps. In the United States, the cheapest and most abundant source is corn - and because the vast majority of U.S. corn is genetically modified, most industrial xylitol is now largely derived from GMO corn byproducts, not pristine birch forests.

The basic industrial process looks like this:

• Acid Hydrolysis: Plant fibers (like corn cobs) are exposed to high heat and sulfuric acid to break down the tough cell walls and release a simple sugar called xylose.

• Hydrogenation: The xylose solution is then placed under high-pressure hydrogen gas in the presence of metal catalysts (often Raney nickel). This chemical reaction converts xylose into xylitol.

• Purification and Crystallization: The resulting mixture is refined, filtered, decolorized, and crystallized into the bright white powder you see on ingredient labels

From a biological perspective, xylitol is not a nutrient and not a food. It is a refined xenobiotic substance that your body has no evolutionary or physiological requirement for. It does not act as a cofactor for enzymes, does not build or repair tissue, and functions as neither a vitamin nor a mineral. It is simply a laboratory-produced industrial sweetener.

If xylitol isn’t a nutrient and is produced in chemical factories, how did it end up with such a positive, “dentist-approved” reputation?

The story traces back to a period in dental research that was far more focused on targeting specific bacteria than on strengthening the host.

The Turku Sugar Studies

A major part of xylitol’s origin story in dentistry comes from the Turku Sugar Studies conducted in Finland in the 1970s. In these trials, researchers took people eating a typical Western diet and replaced most of their sucrose (table sugar) with either fructose or xylitol for about two years.

At first glance, the results looked impressive: the xylitol group developed far fewer cavities than the sucrose group.

From there, the narrative took off. A nuanced finding quickly hardened into a simple slogan: “Xylitol prevents cavities and is good for your teeth.”

Early dental papers went further, suggesting that xylitol could reduce plaque and support enamel remineralization. Professional organizations later echoed this optimism, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) eventually issued a cautious endorsement of xylitol’s potential to reduce tooth decay in children - more than enough for marketers to roll out bold claims and “dentist-recommended” labels.

The core problem with many of these early trials is that they were never designed to test whether xylitol itself was uniquely protective. They were essentially testing what happens to cavity rates when you dramatically reduce sucrose and replace it with a non-sugar substitute.

In practical terms, participants weren’t just adding xylitol; they were removing a substantial amount of sugar. That makes it very difficult to tell whether any benefit was due to xylitol itself, or simply to eating far less sucrose.

When you look instead at better-designed, longer-term studies - where overall sugar intake is controlled and xylitol is the main variable being manipulated - the apparent benefits become smaller, more inconsistent, and far less impressive than the marketing suggests.

The X-ACT Trial: Nearly Three Years, Minimal Benefit

Consider the Xylitol for Adult Caries Trial (X-ACT), one of the most rigorous tests of xylitol’s real-world impact. This was a large, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in adults with elevated cavity risk. A total of 691 participants took five 1-gram xylitol lozenges per day (about 5 g total) for 33 months - almost three years - while a control group took placebo lozenges.

The results were underwhelming:

• There was about a ~10% reduction in new cavities in the xylitol group compared to placebo.

• Quantitatively, this equated to less than one-third of a tooth surface saved per year on average.

• This difference was not statistically significant and was considered clinically meaningless.

In other words, after nearly three years of taking xylitol five times a day, there was no clear, meaningful cavity benefit. If xylitol were truly a powerful and reliable anti-cavity agent, a long, well-designed trial like X-ACT should have shown a strong protective effect. It didn’t.

2024 Evidence Review: No Reliable Cavity Protection

Instead of focusing on a single study, a 2024 systematic review combined data from multiple clinical trials to answer a straightforward question:

Does xylitol consistently prevent cavities?

When the higher-quality studies were analyzed together, xylitol did not emerge as a dependable cavity-prevention tool. The authors ultimately concluded that its preventive effect “cannot be confirmed.”

In plain terms: the popular claim that “xylitol has been proven to prevent cavities” is not supported by strong, consistent evidence.

Gum vs Candy in Children: Chewing vs Xylitol

A 2024 study in children adds another key layer by asking a more nuanced question:

Does the form of xylitol matter?

In this randomized, parallel-group trial, some children were assigned to chew xylitol gum several times per day, while others were given xylitol candies or lozenges containing similar total daily doses. The goal was to see whether chewing versus simply dissolving xylitol in the mouth changed cavity outcomes

The findings were telling:

• Xylitol gum was associated with a small reduction in cavities in some children.

• Xylitol candies and lozenges showed no meaningful benefit.

Because the total xylitol exposure was similar across groups, the only meaningful difference was chewing (gum) versus not chewing. This strongly suggests that whatever benefit exists likely comes from the mechanical act of chewing, not from xylitol itself.

When you control for sugar intake and look at higher-quality, longer-term trials:

• Xylitol does not behave like a robust or consistently effective cavity-prevention agent.

• At best, any benefit appears small and highly context-dependent - often tied to the act of chewing rather than xylitol itself.

• Overall, the claim that xylitol is a proven, powerful anti-cavity ingredient is not supported by the best available evidence.

Most marketing around xylitol implies that it “stays in the mouth”. But once you chew the gum, swallow the “tooth-friendly” syrup, or brush with xylitol toothpaste, it doesn’t just vanish.

A portion is:

• Absorbed (at least partially) in the gut

• Processed by the liver and other tissues

• Filtered and excreted by the kidneys

In other words, xylitol is not just a local oral ingredient. It becomes a systemic exposure that your gut, kidneys, and cardiovascular system have to deal with.

Let’s look at what we know from human studies and clinical reports

Gut: Osmotic Stress and Microbiome Disruption

The first place xylitol makes its presence known is the digestive tract. Two main issues show up here:

1. How poorly it’s absorbed

2. How it reshapes the microbial environment

The mechanism: Your small intestine is designed to rapidly absorb simple sugars like glucose. It is not optimized to handle large amounts of sugar alcohols like xylitol.

Because xylitol is only partially absorbed in the small intestine, a significant portion escapes absorption and travels into the colon.

Once there, the unabsorbed xylitol:

• Draws water into the gut (osmotic effect) → loose stools, diarrhea

• Becomes fuel for bacteria, which ferment it → gas, bloating, cramping

Study: 2007 High-Dose Xylitol Beverage Trial

In a 2007 randomized controlled trial, adults consumed beverages sweetened with 35-50 grams of xylitol. Compared with sucrose:

• The xylitol group experienced significantly higher rates of gas, bloating, and watery diarrhea

In effect, at higher doses, the gut essentially tries to flush xylitol out, confirming its strong osmotic effect.

Review: 2016 Overview of Sugar Alcohols and GI Symptoms

A 2016 scientific review of sugar alcohols found a consistent pattern:

• Xylitol and similar compounds cause dose-dependent flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and laxative effects - even in otherwise healthy individuals, and especially in those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or sensitive digestion.

Of course, a pea-sized amount of xylitol in toothpaste is not delivering 35 grams at once. But modern exposure often comes from many small doses throughout the day:

• Xylitol gum after meals

• Xylitol-containing toothpaste or mouthwash

• “Sugar-free” snacks or desserts

• A packet of xylitol in coffee or tea

For someone with IBS, chronic bloating, or a sensitive gut, these small but frequent exposures can easily add up to persistent, low-grade gut irritation.

Review: 2019 Polyol Sweeteners and Microbiome Shifts

Beyond immediate GI distress, xylitol can also alter the microbial ecology of the gut.

A 2019 systematic review of polyol sweeteners found that even moderate doses can:

• Shift which bacterial species dominate

• Alter the pattern of fermentation in the colon

In other words, xylitol is not microbiologically neutral - it actively changes gut flora dynamics.

Given how tightly the microbiome is linked to immune function, inflammation, metabolism, and even mood and cognition, it’s concerning that we have very limited long-term data on what decades of daily xylitol exposure do to the microbiome - especially in infants and children, whose microbial ecosystems are still developing and more vulnerable to disruption.

Takeaway: Xylitol clearly doesn’t just “stay in the mouth”. For many people - especially those with sensitive digestion or existing gut issues - it can add meaningful gastrointestinal stress and change microbiome dynamics in ways we don’t fully understand yet.

Kidneys: Oxalate Load and Filtration Burden

Your kidneys are the body’s main filtration system. They:

• Filter blood

• Balance electrolytes

• Excrete metabolic waste.

Any foreign compound circulating in the blood - including xylitol - eventually reaches the kidneys.

The metabolic pathway: when xylitol is metabolized in the liver, one of its potential downstream byproducts is oxalate. Oxalates are crystalline compounds that can bind to calcium and form calcium-oxalate kidney stones when levels become high enough.

Case Report: 2020 IV Xylitol and Oxalate Nephropathy

We see the potential of this pathway most dramatically in extreme medical use. A 2020 case report in BMC Nephrology described a 39-year-old man who received very large doses of xylitol intravenously.

The outcome was catastrophic:

• He developed acute kidney injury and metabolic acidosis.

• He eventually fell into a coma.

• Kidney biopsy revealed oxalate crystals clogging the renal tubules—the tiny filtration units of the kidneys.

This scenario goes far beyond what you’d encounter from gum or toothpaste. But it proves a key point: xylitol metabolism can generate oxalate, and when that pathway is pushed hard enough, it can seriously damage the kidneys.

Study: 2022 Xylitol Hydration Drinks in Athletes

We also have data from a more relatable context: oral consumption during strenuous exercise.

In 2022, a study in Frontiers in Physiology compared different hydration beverages in semi-professional athletes undergoing strenuous exercise. Drinks were sweetened either with typical sugars (glucose/fructose) or with xylitol. The researchers then measured biomarkers to see how the kidneys and other systems handled the metabolic load.

The xylitol-sweetened drink performed significantly worse across multiple measures:

• GI Distress: About 39% of the athletes consuming the xylitol drink developed gastrointestinal issues, including diarrhea. This confirms the osmotic mechanism we discussed earlier.

• Blood Markers: The xylitol group showed significant rises in uric acid and creatinine - classic indicators that the kidneys are under increased filtration load.

• Urine Markers: There were increases in albumin and cystatin C in the urine, proteins that should mostly be retained, not excreted. Their presence in urine signals acute kidney stress.

The authors concluded that xylitol-sweetened beverages were a poor choice for hydration because they strained the renal system more than regular sugar under these conditions.

Yes, this study was conducted under intense exercise, when kidneys are already working hard. But it underscores a central point:

Xylitol is not an inert passenger in the bloodstream.
It is a compound the kidneys must actively work to process and clear.

Every deliberate “therapeutic” dose (gum, lozenges, powders) adds to this biological filtration burden on your kidneys.

Heart: Platelet Reactivity and Clotting Risk

Perhaps the most striking new data on xylitol comes from the cardiovascular world.

Study: 2024 Xylitol Levels and Cardiovascular Events

For years, non-nutritive sweeteners were assumed to be largely inert once in circulation. A major 2024 study published in the European Heart Journal has fundamentally challenged that assumption.

In this study, researchers measured fasting blood xylitol levels in a large cohort of patients undergoing cardiac evaluation and followed them for three years.

They found:

• Individuals with the highest levels of circulating xylitol had a significantly increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) - particularly heart attacks and strokes.

Correlation alone doesn’t prove causation, so the researchers dug deeper.

In a controlled feeding study, participants consumed a xylitol-sweetened drink. The investigators then measured how their platelets behaved and saw:

• Platelet reactivity spiked after xylitol consumption.

• Platelets became stickier and more prone to clump together.

This creates a pro-thrombotic state, meaning the blood is more inclined to clot. While clotting is essential to stop bleeding after an injury, spontaneous or excessive clotting inside blood vessels is the mechanism behind:

• Heart attacks (clots in coronary arteries), and

• Ischemic strokes (clots in arteries supplying the brain).

Taken together, these findings suggest that regular xylitol exposure may nudge the body toward a more clot-prone state, especially in those who already have cardiovascular risk factors.

Xylitol is not something the human body is missing. It doesn’t build tissue, support growth, or participate in any essential role in human physiology. It’s a lab-refined sweetener made from industrial plant waste and added to “oral health” products because it fits a convenient marketing narrative - not because our bodies require it.

When you take in a substance your body doesn’t actually need - like xylitol - it still has to be handled by your organs. It must be broken down, moved through the bloodstream, processed by the liver, and filtered by the kidneys. If this happens several times a day, year after year, that extra processing adds to the load on systems that are already burdened with modern diets and environmental exposures. Over time, the accumulated stress can wear these systems down and increase long-term health risks.

At the same time, xylitol doesn’t address the real problem it’s marketed to fix. Cavities and oral disease are not caused by a xylitol deficiency; they’re the predictable result of an undernourished, overburdened system - under-mineralized teeth and bones, compromised jaw and airway development, weak saliva, and daily habits that chronically stress the body. Chewing something that happens to contain xylitol may offer a small, indirect benefit through saliva stimulation, but it does nothing to rebuild that missing foundation.

From that lens, building a prevention strategy around a synthetic sweetener doesn’t make sense. If our aim is true prevention - for ourselves and especially for our children - a more honest approach is to remove as many unnecessary synthetic inputs as we can, including daily xylitol, and focus on what human physiology has always depended on: mineral-rich, nutrient-dense whole foods; robust fat-soluble vitamin and mineral status; healthy breathing and chewing patterns; and clean, non-disruptive oral care products. When those pieces are in place, we don’t need xylitol to “rescue” our teeth—we’re supporting the system that keeps them healthy in the first place.

Practical Takeaways

To put all of this into daily life, here are the key points to remember:

1. Don’t treat xylitol like a nutrient or a health supplement.
   Your body doesn’t need xylitol for anything. It’s a non-essential, industrial sweetener - not a missing dietary building block. Xylitol may offer a little sweetness with fewer calories, but it’s not a health-boosting ingredient, and its cavity-fighting power is modest and inconsistent at best.

2. Be cautious with daily “therapeutic” use.
   An occasional piece of xylitol-sweetened gum is one thing. But if you’re deliberately using xylitol after every meal (gum, mints, candies) or adding xylitol syrup/powder to foods “for your teeth,” remember this isn’t the same as taking a vitamin. Any cavity benefit is minor, and high habitual use might quietly stress your gut, kidneys, cardiovascular system, or metabolism over time. In short: don’t overdo it or treat xylitol like a must-have dental routine.

3. Put your effort where the payoff is biggest: nutrients and structure.
   Focus on what truly rebuilds and protects teeth and jaws - especially if you’re planning a pregnancy, are currently pregnant, or raising young children. Prioritize:

   • Nutrient-dense foods rich in vitamins A, D, and K₂ (egg yolks, grass-fed butter, organ meats, oily fish, fish eggs).

   • Mineral-rich foods (quality dairy, bone broths, read meat, organ extracts, mineral-rich stocks).

   • Adequate protein from well-raised animal sources (meat, poultry, seafood).

   • Real chewing of fibrous, whole foods to support jaw development and saliva flow.

This is where real, long-term cavity prevention happens. Strengthen the body and the teeth from the inside out, and you naturally become less prone to decay.

You don’t need to micromanage every ingredient label or swear off all sweet tastes to improve your dental health. But when it comes to xylitol, it’s useful to view it through a whole-body, nutrition-first lens.

In the end, strong teeth come from nourishment, not novelty.

Crucially, the brain has a limited ability to repair itself. Unlike skin or liver tissue that regenerates readily, mature neurons in the central nervous system have only a modest capacity to recover once damaged. By adulthood, the generation of new neurons is extremely limited.

This combination of high energy demand and limited regenerative capacity makes the brain uniquely susceptible to environmental toxins, which means it needs unparalleled protection.

To protect the brain, the body built a formidable fortress: the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Its job is simple: keep dangerous substances out of the brain while allowing essential nutrients in.

To do this, the BBB uses tightly sealed junctions between cells that:

A 2018 study found that fluoride exposure specifically altered the cholinergic system, a neurotransmitter pathway vital for cognitive function and processing information.

3. Crippling Mitochondrial Energy Production: Neurons demand vast amounts of ATP (cellular energy). Fluoride has been shown to disrupt mitochondrial enzymes, reducing the cell’s ability to produce energy efficiently. A 2024 comprehensive literature review highlights fluoride’s impact on energy metabolism, underscoring how low neuronal energy can lead to reduced learning, slower processing, and impaired synaptic plasticity.

These mechanisms of damage affect all ages, but the impact is far more profound on the developing brain.

During pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood, the brain undergoes rapid, complex growth - a “construction phase” that never recurs. Neurons are forming new circuits, migrating to their positions, and pruning unused connections, all orchestrated by precise chemical signals.

The 2019 Canadian Study (Green et al.)

Published in JAMA Pediatrics - one of the most influential medical journals - this study compared fluoride intake in nearly 600 pregnant women. It concluded that children aged 3-4 scored significantly lower on IQ tests when prenatal fluoride exposure was higher. The average fluoride exposure in the study was 0.7 mg/L, precisely the level found in most U.S. fluoridated water.

The 2020 Canadian Infant Study (Till et al.)

Published in Environment International, this research focused on postnatal exposure. It revealed that formula-fed infants in fluoridated areas ingested up to 100 times more fluoride than breast-fed infants. These higher exposures were later associated with measurable reductions in cognitive performance.

Recent Reviews and Meta-Analyses (e.g., Grandjean et al., 2021)

Major scientific reviews, such as the one published in Environmental Health by Grandjean et al., have examined the cumulative evidence. They consistently confirm a “statistically significant” relationship between fluoride exposure and cognitive impairment, even at levels previously considered “safe” by regulatory bodies.

These reviews conclude that fluoride is a developmental neurotoxicant.

The neurotoxic effects of fluoride are not theoretical. They are measurable, and they are occurring at exposure levels experienced daily by millions of families through tap water, toothpaste, mouthwash, tea, and baby formula.

Neurotoxicity doesn’t require massive, acute doses or a poisoning event. It accumulates quietly, particularly in the developing brain, shaping a child’s lifelong capacity for learning, memory, attention, and emotional regulation.

This isn’t a small issue. It’s a generational one, impacting foundational cognitive development.

The good news is that you have agency over your family’s fluoride exposure. You don’t need to eliminate it completely, but reducing it to a level that mitigates neurological risk is a powerful step.

Here’s where to start:

1. Switch to Fluoride-Free Toothpaste: For both children and adults, brushing with fluoridated toothpaste is a significant daily source of fluoride. Opt for fluoride-free alternatives.

2. Filter Your Tap Water Effectively: Be aware that standard activated carbon filters (like Brita pitchers) do not remove fluoride. Invest in a filtration system specifically designed for fluoride removal, such as reverse osmosis or activated alumina/bone char filters.

3. Prioritize Infants and Pregnant Women:

   • Always use fluoride-free water when mixing baby formula.

   • Pregnant women should be particularly mindful of their fluoride intake, minimizing fluoridated tap water and beverages like black or green tea, which can be high in fluoride.

   • Avoid fluoridated mouthwashes.

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped organ located at the base of your neck. Despite its unassuming size, it acts as the master regulator of the body’s metabolism. Its main job is to set the metabolic rate: the speed at which your body converts food and oxygen into energy. In essence, the thyroid’s hormones set the pace for how fast (or slow) every cell in your body works.

To maintain this steady rhythm, the thyroid produces two key hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Once released into the bloodstream, these hormones act as messengers to virtually every organ and tissue. They help regulate your heart rate and blood pressure, control body temperature, and even influence mood, digestion, and reproductive health. In children, thyroid hormones are absolutely critical for normal growth and brain development.

Think of the thyroid as your internal thermostat. When it’s in balance, energy levels stay steady, thinking remains sharp, and all bodily functions run smoothly. But if this gland slows down even slightly, the effects ripple through the entire body. Fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, cold intolerance, and brain fog are often the first signs that metabolism is dragging. Simply put, when the thyroid underperforms, practically every system in the body slows down.

For the thyroid to function properly, it relies on one mineral above all others: iodine. Every molecule of thyroid hormone is built from iodine - four iodine atoms make up thyroxine (T4) and three iodine atoms make up triiodothyronine (T3). Without enough iodine, the thyroid simply cannot manufacture the hormones that keep metabolism on track.

Under normal conditions, thyroid cells actively pull iodine from the bloodstream using specialized “pumps” called sodium-iodide symporters. These symporters concentrate iodine into the gland, where the mineral is attached to the amino acid tyrosine to form T4 and T3. Once these hormones are assembled, the thyroid releases them into circulation to deliver energy and metabolic instructions to nearly every cell in the body.

When iodine intake or absorption falls short, hormone production slows, and the thyroid works overtime to compensate. Over time, this deficiency can lead to a visible enlargement of the gland (known as a goiter) as it struggles to capture every bit of iodine it can find in order to keep up with hormone production.

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid can no longer produce enough T4 and T3 to meet the body’s needs. Because these hormones influence virtually every cell and organ, even a slight drop can disrupt how we generate energy, regulate temperature, and maintain mental clarity. What may start as subtle fatigue or trouble concentrating can slowly evolve into a widespread hormonal and metabolic imbalance affecting nearly every aspect of health.

Common signs of an underactive thyroid include:

• Metabolism slows: You burn fewer calories at rest, and weight gain can occur more easily.

• Body temperature drops: Circulation cools, so hands and feet often feel cold.

• Digestion sluggish: Constipation and other digestive issues may develop.

• Skin and hair changes: Skin can become dry, and hair may start thinning or falling out.

Yet under the surface, every cell in the body is operating below capacity - a subtle but significant energy deficit that drains vitality and resilience. Identifying why the thyroid is slowing down is crucial to restoring health.

Fluoride is often described as “safe in small amounts,” yet its chemistry and behavior in the body tell a different story. As a member of the halogen family (alongside iodine, bromine, and chlorine), fluoride is highly reactive and competes directly with iodine for absorption. This is critical because the thyroid depends entirely on iodine to produce its hormones, T4 and T3, which drive metabolism and energy throughout the body.

Inside the thyroid, fluoride disrupts hormone production at its very first step. The thyroid relies on sodium-iodide symporters — tiny molecular “pumps” that pull iodine into its cells so hormone production can begin. You can think of these symporters as locks on the thyroid’s doors and iodine as the key that fits perfectly. When fluoride enters the picture, it acts like the wrong key jammed in the lock, blocking the door and preventing iodine from getting inside. As a result, the thyroid can’t absorb enough iodine to function properly, and hormone production begins to slow.

Even when iodine does make it inside, fluoride can continue to interfere. Research shows that fluoride inhibits thyroid peroxidase (TPO), the enzyme responsible for binding iodine to tyrosine - the reaction that actually creates thyroid hormones. When TPO activity is blocked, fewer thyroid hormones are formed, leading to a subtle but persistent slowdown in metabolism.

Over time, this interference can quietly push the thyroid toward underactivity, even in people who consume enough iodine. The result is not an immediate collapse, but a gradual dimming of the body’s energy and balance - one that often goes unnoticed until symptoms emerge.

Fluoride’s thyroid-suppressing effect isn’t a modern revelation. Decades ago, before today’s anti-thyroid drugs were available, physicians deliberately used fluoride as a treatment to slow down an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). Research in the mid-20th century found that doses as low as 2–5 mg of fluoride per day significantly reduced thyroid hormone levels and lowered the basal metabolic rate in hyperthyroid patients. (For context, 2–5 mg is roughly the amount many people now ingest each day through fluoridated water, food, beverages, and dental products.)

Modern research has reinforced these findings. The U.S. National Research Council (NRC), in a comprehensive 2006 report on fluoride toxicity, concluded that fluoride exposure can impair thyroid function - especially in people with inadequate iodine intake. The NRC also warned that children and pregnant women may be particularly susceptible to fluoride’s endocrine effects.

More recently, population studies have drawn the same connection. In 2015, a large-scale study published in Environmental Health looked at thyroid disorder rates across England, examining data from 98% of the country’s general medical practices. It found that hypothyroidism rates were nearly double in areas with fluoridated water compared to areas without fluoridation - even after adjusting for differences in age, gender, and socioeconomic status.

Similar patterns have emerged globally. Studies in India, China, and Iran have repeatedly shown that even moderate fluoride exposure (around 0.5 to 1.5 parts per million in water - levels common in many U.S. water communities) correlates with reduced T3 and T4 hormone levels, elevated TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), and higher rates of goiter in the population.

Taken together, these findings reveal a consistent truth: fluoride can and does interfere with normal thyroid hormone production - especially in people who don’t get enough iodine or who are exposed to fluoride over long periods.

The thyroid doesn’t just control metabolism, it influences nearly every system in the body. When its function slows, the effects ripple far beyond fatigue or weight gain. Every cell, tissue, and organ depends on thyroid hormones to convert fuel into energy. When fluoride interferes with this process, the entire body begins to run at a lower setting — energy fades, focus blurs, digestion slows, and mood declines.

This is especially concerning for those most vulnerable to hormonal disruption: children, pregnant women, and people with already low iodine intake. In developing babies and young children, even mild thyroid suppression can impair brain development and growth. For adults, chronic low thyroid activity can quietly drive issues like infertility, depression, metabolic dysfunction, and cardiovascular strain.

Understanding fluoride’s effect on the thyroid isn’t about alarmism — it’s about awareness. The same chemical once prescribed to suppress thyroid function is now part of everyday life through water, toothpaste, and food residues. Recognizing this connection allows us to take meaningful steps, like choosing fluoride-free products and ensuring adequate iodine intake, to protect one of the body’s most vital control centers.

Completely avoiding fluoride in today’s world isn’t easy - but reducing exposure is both possible and powerful. Because fluoride accumulates in the body over time, even small daily choices can make a lasting difference for your thyroid health.

1. Filter your water. Most municipal systems add fluoride to drinking water. Use a reverse osmosis or activated alumina filter, as standard carbon filters do not remove fluoride effectively. Whenever possible, cook and drink with filtered or non-fluoridated water - especially for infants, children, and pregnant women.

2. Choose fluoride-free dental products. Toothpaste and mouth rinses are common sources of absorption, particularly for children. Opt for fluoride-free toothpaste or hydroxyapatite-based alternatives, which strengthen enamel without harming your thyroid.

3. Be mindful of hidden fluoride sources. Tea leaves naturally accumulate fluoride, and processed beverages made with fluoridated water (soda, juice, soups, powders) can significantly increase intake. Reducing these and prioritizing whole, unprocessed foods can meaningfully cut your daily intake.

4. Support iodine and nutrient balance. Ensure adequate intake of iodine, selenium, magnesium, and vitamin A, which all play vital roles in thyroid hormone production and protection. A nutrient-rich diet - especially one centered around whole foods - helps counter fluoride’s interference.

5. Stay informed. Awareness is prevention. Understanding where fluoride hides and how it behaves in the body empowers you to make informed decisions - for yourself, your family, and your community.

Small changes made consistently can restore balance over time. Protecting your thyroid begins with knowing what disrupts it - and recognizing that the choices we make each day truly matter.

Skeletal fluorosis is a chronic bone and joint disorder caused by the gradual buildup of fluoride in the skeleton. Over years of continuous exposure, fluoride accumulates in bone tissue and disrupts the normal cycle of bone renewal (remodeling). Early on, these changes are microscopic and cause no obvious symptoms. But over time, subtle damage accumulates into serious structural problems: bones slowly lose their natural resilience, becoming harder but more brittle, and joints gradually lose flexibility as ligaments and joint tissues calcify.

To understand how fluoride affects bones, it helps to understand how healthy bones function. Bone may seem rock-solid and unchanging, but it’s actually living, dynamic tissue. A healthy bone has two main components working together to give it both flexibility and strength:

• A flexible framework: Roughly half of a bone’s volume is a matrix of tough collagen protein fibers. This collagen network provides a bit of bend and stretch, so the bone isn’t too brittle.

• Hard mineral crystals: The other half of bone is made of tiny calcium phosphate crystals (hydroxyapatite) that deposit around the collagen fibers. These mineral crystals harden the structure, giving bone its rigidity and load-bearing strength.

Throughout our lives, bones constantly renew and repair themselves through a process called bone remodeling. In this process, specialized cells work in balance: osteoclast cells break down and remove old or weakened bone (resorption), and osteoblast cells build new bone to replace it.

Under normal conditions, this removal-and-replacement cycle stays in equilibrium – the amount of bone removed is about equal to the amount rebuilt. This continuous remodeling repairs minor damage (like tiny stress cracks), adapts bone density to our activity level, and maintains proper bone structure.

For example, consider a weight-bearing leg bone. It has a dense outer layer of compact bone for sturdy support, and a spongy inner layer of trabecular bone near the joints to help absorb impacts. Both types rely on proper mineralization (the right deposition of calcium and phosphate) alongside the collagen matrix to stay strong yet slightly flexible.

In essence, healthy bone strikes a delicate balance: it is rigid enough to support us, but flexible enough to bend slightly under stress without breaking. If the remodeling process is disrupted, or if something alters the composition of the bone’s mineral crystals, the bone can become either too fragile or too inflexible (rigid).

When fluoride enters the body, it doesn’t just float around harmlessly - it has a strong affinity for calcium-rich areas, and our bones are the largest calcium reservoirs we have. Fluoride ions readily bind with the calcium in bone. In doing so, fluoride actually becomes part of the bone’s mineral content, forming a compound called fluorapatite - essentially a fluoride-enriched version of the normal bone mineral (hydroxyapatite).

At first, a bone loaded with fluoride may appear denser on an X-ray because the extra mineral can increase bone mass. However, that density is misleading. Fluoride interferes with the bone-remodeling cycle and prompts new bone to form with abnormal structure. Instead of the smooth, healthy replacement of old bone, fluoride causes the bone to rebuild in a flawed way- producing bone that is more mineralized (hence denser) but riddled with structural defects.

Imagine building a brick wall using brittle or misshapen bricks: the wall might look solid from the outside, but it will crack more easily under pressure. Similarly, under a microscope, bone affected by excess fluoride has larger, more imperfect mineral crystals and an imbalanced collagen-to-mineral ratio. In practical terms, this means the bone becomes harder but more brittle and prone to damage. Experts initially expected that adding fluoride into bone would strengthen it (since fluorapatite is a very hard mineral), but human studies have found this is not the case. Numerous studies have observed that while fluoride exposure can increase bone density, it does not translate into stronger bones. In fact, the new bone formed in the presence of excess fluoride is structurally weaker and more prone to fractures. In essence, fluoride in bone creates an illusion of strength (higher density on scans) while actually reducing the bone’s true resilience.

Fluoride’s harmful effects on bone don’t happen overnight - they build up gradually over decades. As more and more fluoride accumulates in the skeleton, skeletal fluorosis typically progresses through several stages of increasing severity:

Early Stage (Mild): Vague aches and stiffness begin to appear, often in the lower back, hips, knees, or neck. At this stage, someone might notice occasional joint pain or a stiff back, especially in the morning or after exercise. These subtle symptoms are easily mistaken for normal aging or everyday wear-and-tear. There are usually no obvious signs on X-rays yet, and bone density might even appear normal or only slightly increased.

Middle Stage (Moderate): With continued fluoride exposure, the symptoms become more pronounced and harder to ignore. Pain in the bones and joints grows more frequent, and movements that used to be easy – like bending, lifting, or climbing stairs – become increasingly difficult due to stiffness and pain. Ligaments and joint capsules may start to calcify (harden with mineral deposits), reducing flexibility. A person in this stage might have constant joint and back pain that doesn’t respond well to typical treatments. An X-ray at this point might show unusually dense bone patches or calcified ligaments around joints, although doctors might not immediately recognize these as signs of fluorosis.

Advanced Stage (Severe): After many years (often decades) of high fluoride accumulation, the damage can become crippling. Bones may thicken, deform, or develop odd bony outgrowths (exostoses). Joints can lose almost all mobility – for example, spinal vertebrae may enlarge and fuse together, and ligaments (especially in the spine and major joints) can ossify (literally turn to bone). The skeletal structure becomes so rigid that normal movement is profoundly limited. These changes can also compress nerves; for instance, hardened ligaments in the spine may pinch spinal nerves, leading to neurological symptoms like tingling, numbness, or weakness in the limbs. Muscles may waste away from disuse when movement becomes too painful or difficult. In extreme cases, a person may become nearly immobile – a condition historically known as crippling skeletal fluorosis. (In clinical reports, advanced fluorosis has led to patients becoming wheelchair-bound or bedridden due to multiple fractures and fused joints.)

▶︎ Key point: Skeletal fluorosis is a slow, progressive disease. What starts as mild stiffness and occasional aches can, over decades of fluoride accumulation, advance into severe joint deformities, constant pain, and loss of mobility.

One of the most troubling aspects of fluoride is that it is a cumulative toxin – the body does not excrete it efficiently. Each day, small exposures (from sources like fluoridated tap water, tea, or swallowed toothpaste) add a little more fluoride to your bones. Over time, these daily doses build up a significant reservoir of fluoride in the skeleton and joints.

Unlike many other toxins that the body can filter out in days or weeks, fluoride stays in bone for decades. Scientists estimate that once fluoride has built up in your bones, it has an extremely long biological half-life, on the order of 20 years or more. In other words, if you completely stopped ingesting any new fluoride today, roughly half of the fluoride stored in your bones would still be there 20 years from now.

This glacial pace of fluoride clearance means that the fluoride accumulated in your 30s or 40s could still be affecting your bone health in your 60s and 70s. Real-world observations back this up. In one study, workers from a Swiss aluminum factory had very high fluoride exposure on the job. Years after these workers stopped being exposed (after retirement), researchers measured their bone fluoride levels. They found that even after two decades away from fluoride exposure, the workers’ bones had only lost about half of the fluoride they had accumulated. In essence, their skeletons were still carrying decades-old fluoride.

This extremely slow elimination explains why skeletal fluorosis sneaks up on people: it doesn’t appear suddenly, but rather builds silently year after year as fluoride progressively loads into the bones. By the time clear symptoms emerge, a vast amount of fluoride has been entrenched in the skeletal system for a long time.

The tragedy of skeletal fluorosis lies in its silence. Early symptoms creep in so gradually that most people (and even their doctors) mistake them for something else. Mild joint stiffness, occasional aches, or slightly brittle bones are almost always blamed on “just getting older” or common arthritis. Yet mounting research and clinical observations suggest that in some cases, these age-related complaints might actually be the early signs of fluoride’s accumulated burden on the body. The clinical symptoms of fluoride’s effect on bones are indistinguishable from arthritis in many cases. In fact, even relatively low-level fluoride exposure can contribute to or worsen these joint and bone problems, especially in people with certain nutritional predispositions. In other words, what looks like ordinary osteoarthritis or general aging could be something more preventable: fluoride slowly damaging the bones and joints.

Even at fluoride levels long considered “safe,” the buildup in our bones can be significant. The U.S. National Research Council has noted that at a water fluoridation level of about 1 part per million (ppm), a person’s skeleton could accumulate several thousand milligrams (i.e. multiple grams) of fluoride after just 10–20 years of exposure. Studies from India and China – countries with widespread fluorosis – have documented cases of skeletal fluorosis at water fluoride levels as low as 0.7–1.5 ppm. (For context, 0.7–1.0 ppm is the range of fluoride typically added to many U.S. and Canadian water supplies.) These findings challenge the long-held assumption in North America that skeletal fluorosis doesn’t occur at water fluoride levels below about 4 ppm. In light of the evidence, and considering that fluoride is not a nutrient our bodies require, it’s worth rethinking the notion that long-term fluoride exposure at commonly encountered levels is harmless.

Another harsh truth is that once fluoride is locked into your bones, the damage is essentially irreversible. There is no established medical treatment to remove fluoride from bone or to reverse the structural changes it causes. In advanced cases of fluorosis, even significantly reducing fluoride intake cannot undo calcified ligaments or fix long-standing bone deformities. Scientific reviews emphasize that once skeletal fluorosis has progressed, it cannot be “cured” in the usual sense – the focus must be on preventing excessive fluoride accumulation in the first place. Some improvement may occur if fluoride exposure is stopped early enough, because the body will slowly (over decades) excrete fluoride from bones, and bone remodeling can gradually replace some damaged bone with healthy bone. However, this is a very slow process and often only partial. In practical terms, that means the skeletal damage fluoride causes can last a lifetime.

In summary, what many people accept as “normal” aging – stiff joints, aches, and reduced mobility – may in some cases be a preventable condition. Just because a health problem develops slowly does not mean it’s harmless, and just because a condition has become common doesn’t mean it’s “normal.” Fluoride will leave its mark on the skeleton whether we notice it or not. By recognizing this silent accumulation for what it is, we have a chance to prevent future generations from carrying an invisible fluoride burden into their later years.

Completely avoiding fluoride in today’s world is challenging. It’s present in many water supplies, foods, and dental products - but you can take practical steps to lower your lifetime exposure and protect your bones. In fact, the same measures that prevent dental fluorosis in children can also help safeguard your bones from skeletal fluorosis:

• Mind your water source: Whenever possible, drink and cook with water that is not fluoridated, or use a reliable water filtration system that removes fluoride. This is one of the most effective ways to reduce daily fluoride intake, since water and beverages made from water are major fluoride sources for many people. If you live in an area with fluoridated tap water, consider using filtered or non-fluoridated water for drinking and cooking, especially for young children or if you consume large volumes of water (e.g. athletes or outdoor workers).

• Be careful with dental products: Choose fluoride-free toothpaste and mouth rinses, especially for young children. Many people (kids in particular) end up swallowing some toothpaste or mouthwash, inadvertently ingesting fluoride.

• Watch for hidden fluoride in foods and drinks: Be aware that certain foods and beverages can contribute to your fluoride intake. Tea (made from tea leaves, which naturally accumulate fluoride), sodas and juices reconstituted with fluoridated water, and some processed foods or powders (soups, powdered drink mixes, reconstituted juice concentrates.) may contain significant fluoride. Some supplements and medications also contain fluoride. Read labels and opt for lower-fluoride alternatives when you can.

• Support bone health through nutrition: Maintain a nutrient-rich diet that supports your bones. Adequate calcium and magnesium intake can help keep your mineral balance in check, potentially reducing how much fluoride your body retains (since calcium, for example, can compete with fluoride for absorption). Vitamins D and K2 are crucial for bone health and proper mineral utilization – they help ensure calcium goes into bones where it’s needed (and not into soft tissues). A strong nutritional foundation helps your body handle minerals properly and may mitigate some of fluoride’s impact.

Each of these choices may seem small, but they add up significantly over time. By reducing avoidable fluoride sources day by day, you can dramatically cut down the total amount of fluoride that accumulates in your bones in the long run. Starting early is especially important!

Absorption

When you ingest fluoride – whether from drinking water, toothpaste, or foods – your body absorbs most of it. Approximately 80–90% of ingested fluoride is rapidly absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream.

Once absorbed, fluoride disperses throughout the body via the blood circulation. Unlike nutrients whose levels are tightly regulated by the body, fluoride is not subject to any homeostatic control in our blood. It goes wherever the blood flows, chemically reacting with organs and tissues as it circulates.

Retention and Accumulation

After absorption, the kidneys work to filter toxins out of the blood, but their capacity is limited when it comes to fluoride. On average, only about 50% of the fluoride an adult ingests each day is excreted in urine; the other half remains in the body, where it is free to roam and gradually accumulates as a cumulative toxin.

This retention rate is even higher in the very young. Children may retain up to 60–80% of absorbed fluoride, and infants under one year old can retain as much as 90%.

What makes fluoride’s accumulation especially concerning is that the human body has no efficient mechanism to remove stored fluoride. Once fluoride lodges in our tissues, there is no enzyme or metabolic pathway that can quickly dislodge it. Only very slow processes - such as the turnover of bone tissue or the tiny amount of fluoride released from bone and excreted by the kidneys - can reduce the body’s fluoride burden, and these processes occur over years.

For example, even after stopping fluoride intake completely, studies have found that bone fluoride levels might fall by only about 50% after 20 years. In practical terms, if you stopped ingesting fluoride today, it would take two decades for your body to eliminate just half of what has already accumulated. Each new exposure simply adds to the cumulative burden. Layer by layer, year after year, fluoride quietly embeds itself deeper into our tissues.

Why Fluoride Accumulates in Bones and Teeth

When fluoride enters the bloodstream, it doesn’t distribute evenly across all organs; instead, it gravitates toward calcium-rich tissues. Roughly 99% of the fluoride that remains in the body is ultimately stored in bones and teeth.

This is no coincidence of anatomy but rather a predictable result of chemistry. Fluorine (the elemental form of fluoride) is the most electronegative element on the periodic table, which means it strongly attracts positively charged minerals like calcium. In effect, fluoride seeks out areas where calcium is abundant and binds tightly to those calcium-rich mineral matrices. This chemistry explains why our teeth and bones become the primary storage sites for fluoride.

This selective deposition sets the stage for the earliest visible sign of excess fluoride exposure during development: dental fluorosis.

Dental fluorosis is a developmental disturbance of tooth enamel caused by excess fluoride exposure during the years when teeth are forming. It isn’t a genetic disease or a random defect; it’s a visible outcome of too much fluoride in a child’s body during a critical growth period. In essence, dental fluorosis is the evidence, written on your teeth, that fluoride disrupted the normal enamel-building process.

Timing Matters: The “Critical Window”

Teeth form long before they erupt into the mouth, and enamel is built only once. There are specific “critical windows” in early life when excessive fluoride can damage developing teeth:

• Baby (primary) teeth: Begin forming around the 14th week of pregnancy and finish mineralizing by about age 3.

• Permanent (adult) teeth: Start forming at birth and continue developing under the gums until roughly age 8 (wisdom teeth extend into the teenage years).

If fluoride intake is high during these developmental windows - whether from water, toothpaste, mouth rinses, or other sources - the normal enamel-forming process is disrupted. When fluorosis later appears on the teeth, it signals that a child’s fluoride exposure reached toxic levels at some point during enamel development.

How Healthy Enamel Forms

To appreciate what goes wrong in fluorosis, it helps to first understand how healthy enamel is formed.

Enamel formation is a precisely orchestrated biological process. Specialized cells called ameloblasts secrete and organize the enamel tissue in stages. Initially, ameloblasts produce a protein-rich matrix as a scaffold. Then, during the enamel maturation stage, those proteins are gradually removed and replaced with tightly packed crystals of hydroxyapatite (a calcium-phosphate mineral). The result under ideal conditions is a dense, glass-like lattice of mineral; mature enamel is about 96% mineral, making it the hardest tissue in the human body. Healthy enamel comes out extremely smooth, hard, and resistant to wear - essentially a suit of armor designed to last a lifetime.

How Excess Fluoride Disrupts Enamel Formation

When excess fluoride is present during those critical periods of enamel formation, it derails the maturation process. Fluoride can interfere with the removal of proteins and the orderly deposition of minerals. At the atomic level, fluoride ions swap in for the normal hydroxyl groups in the hydroxyapatite crystal lattice. This seemingly small substitution has a big impact: instead of growing smooth, tightly packed enamel crystals, the presence of fluoride distorts the crystal growth. The developing enamel ends up with microscopic gaps and irregularities. In short, too much fluoride makes enamel that is more porous, less organized, and permanently weaker.

Stages of Dental Fluorosis

The severity of dental fluorosis depends on how much fluoride a child consumed (and for how long) during tooth development. When the affected teeth finally erupt into the mouth, the damage becomes visible. Dentists generally categorize fluorosis severity as follows:

• Mild fluorosis: Faint white streaks or tiny opaque specks on the enamel surface.

• Moderate fluorosis: Larger chalky white patches on enamel, often with a rougher texture.

• Severe fluorosis: Distinct brown stains, significant pitting of the enamel, and areas so brittle that the enamel can chip or flake away.

Mild dental fluorosis appears as faint white streaks or specks on tooth enamel. In the photo above, you can see small opaque white patches on the upper front teeth – this is characteristic of a mild case. These subtle markings might be easy to overlook or dismiss as purely “cosmetic,” but they are an early red flag that excessive fluoride disrupted the enamel’s formation.

(ideally one with third-party testing to confirm fluoride removal). Most simple pitcher or faucet filters do not eliminate fluoride. If you rely on bottled water, look for brands labeled “fluoride-free,” or check the water quality report to ensure low fluoride levels.

2. Toothpaste: Switch to fluoride-free toothpaste, especially for young children. Kids under six often swallow toothpaste, and even a pea-sized dab of standard 1000–1500 ppm fluoride paste is a significant dose if ingested twice daily. Also, avoid fun flavors or sparkly toothpastes that might encourage children to swallow their toothpaste.

3. Nutrition: Ensure your diet includes nutrients that can help counteract fluoride. Fluorine vs. Fluoride

To understand fluoride, we first need to start with fluorine.

Fluorine is a natural element on the periodic table, and it’s unique because it’s the most reactive element known to science. Because it’s so reactive, fluorine is never found on its own in nature - it simply can’t exist that way. The moment it appears, it instantly bonds to whatever’s nearby.

Think of it like a magnet that can’t sit still.

When fluorine bonds with something else, it becomes a fluoride compound. The word “fluoride” simply means fluorine is present as part of a chemical pairing.

For example, when fluorine bonds with calcium, it creates calcium fluoride.

Natural vs. Man-Made Fluoride

Health agencies, websites, and public figures often describe fluoride as a “naturally occurring substance” found in soil, water, rocks, and even animals. While this statement is technically true, it can be misleading. It gives the impression that fluoride must be safe and beneficial simply because it exists in nature.

But this view overlooks two key facts:

1. Natural does not always mean safe.
   Fluorine may be a naturally occurring element, but that doesn’t make it healthy for the human body. Arsenic, lead, aluminum and mercury are also naturally occurring elements, yet they’re all unquestionably toxic.

2. The fluoride in water and toothpaste isn’t natural.
   The fluoride added to tap water and toothpaste isn’t elemental fluorine or naturally occurring minerals. They’re man-made chemicals produced in factories or recovered as industrial byproducts. These forms of fluoride do not occur in nature.

▶︎ Key Point: The fluoride in tap water and toothpaste comes from industry, not from nature. And the word “natural” should never be confused with “safe.”

In the United States, fluoride was first added to public water supplies in the 1940s, followed by its introduction into dental products in the 1950s. This process is accomplished by adding one of three chemicals:

• Fluorosilicic acid (H₂SiF₆)

• Sodium fluoride (NaF)

• Sodium fluorosilicate (Na₂SiF₆)

Our focus will be on the first two, since they represent the main sources of everyday fluoride exposure.

The main chemical used to fluoridate public water is fluorosilicic acid. Despite its role in public health today, its origins have nothing to do with health or medicine - its story begins in heavy industry.

In the early 1900s, fertilizer factories released huge amounts of fluoride gases into the air, mainly hydrogen fluoride (HF) and silicon tetrafluoride (SiF₄).

These gases poisoned nearby farmland, burning crops and crippling livestock. Cows developed a severe bone disease (skeletal fluorosis), lost their teeth, and many died.

By the 1950s, fluoride pollution had caused more lawsuits from farmers than any other industrial contaminant of that era.

To stop the lawsuits and environmental damage, industries installed devices called wet scrubbers. These machines sprayed water to trap the toxic gases before they escaped into the air.

This reduced air pollution, but it created a new problem: the gases dissolved into the water formed a highly corrosive liquid called fluorosilicic acid.

Now companies had thousands of gallons of hazardous waste on their hands - difficult and expensive to dispose of safely.

Rather than throw it away, fertilizer companies found a buyer: local water utilities. By the late 1940s and early 1950s, truckloads of fluorosilicic acid were being drip-fed into public drinking water as the new “cavity-prevention” additive.

In effect, the same fluoride waste that once killed cattle and destroyed farmland was now rebranded as dental care.

The second major fluoride compound we encounter is sodium fluoride. Today, it’s most famous as the active ingredient in toothpaste.

Sodium fluoride is not a naturally occurring mineral; it’s produced through industrial chemical processes, often as a byproduct of manufacturing other materials.

For over half a century, every major use of sodium fluoride has revolved around its ability to kill or corrode.

Late 1800s – Wood Preservative
Railroads and telephone companies faced a costly problem: wooden ties and poles rotted quickly outdoors. Rain, fungi, and insects ate through the wood, cutting short its lifespan. The solution wasn’t paint or varnish… it was poison. Workers soaked the lumber in sodium fluoride, relying on its toxicity to kill fungi and insects before they could destroy the wood.

Early 1900s – Pesticide & Rat Poison
Food supplies and homes were under constant threat. Rats destroyed grain and spread disease, while roaches and lice infested barns and kitchens. To fight back, sodium fluoride was packaged in small tins and sold in stores. Farmers scattered it in barns to kill rodents, and city dwellers sprinkled it in kitchens to drive out insects.

1920s-1930s - Heavy Machinery
The steel and aluminum boom created new problems. Molten metal carried impurities that weakened it, and machinery rusted quickly under harsh conditions. Sodium fluoride became the fix. Mixed into molten metal, it pulled impurities to the surface where they could be removed. Applied to machinery, it ate through rust and grime, leaving the surface clean.

For more than fifty years, sodium fluoride was prized for one defining trait: its toxicity. It preserved wood, killed pests, and cleaned heavy machinery. Never once was it considered a nutrient, a medicine, or anything remotely related to health.

That story began to shift in the 1930s and 1940s. Researchers noticed that children living in areas with naturally high levels of calcium fluoride in their water appeared to have fewer cavities... though their teeth were often stained, brittle, and weak - a condition later named dental fluorosis.

This observation sparked a new idea: perhaps fluoride could help prevent tooth decay. But instead of using natural calcium fluoride, scientists turned to sodium fluoride: it was cheap, water-soluble, and already being mass-produced by chemical companies.

By the mid-20th century, the transformation was complete:

• 1940 ⇢ Researchers began applying sodium fluoride solutions onto schoolchildren’s teeth in test communities.

• 1945 ⇢ Grand Rapids, Michigan became the first city to add sodium fluoride directly to its water supply.

• 1955 ⇢ Crest launched the first fluoride toothpaste, proudly listing sodium fluoride as the “active ingredient.”

Within a single decade, the very same compound once packaged and sold as “rat poison” was rebranded as a health product - brushed into the mouths of millions of children and celebrated as progress in modern dentistry.

Note to readers: The claim that calcium fluoride reduced cavities never withstood serious scrutiny. It relied on flawed studies, most notably data cherry-picking and selection bias, and has long been discredited.

Despite its new image, sodium fluoride’s identity as a toxic chemical hasn’t disappeared. Even now, it is legally classified as an acutely toxic substance. Industrial-grade containers carry a skull-and-crossbones hazard label to warn anyone who comes near it.

In facilities where it’s stored or used, workers never handle it casually:

⚠️ Protective clothing is required. Lab coats, coveralls, nitrile gloves, goggles, and face shields are mandatory. Ventilation systems run constantly, because inhaling even a trace of sodium fluoride dust can damage the lungs.

⚠️ Contact is dangerous. A splash on the skin can cause chemical burns; in the eyes, it requires emergency flushing and medical treatment. Ingestion is worse: just a few grams - about the weight of a sugar packet - can be fatal to an adult.

⚠️ Even storage and disposal are tightly controlled. Sodium fluoride must be kept under lock and key, with detailed hazard logs. Any spills or waste must be treated through approved hazardous-materials facilities.

These protocols aren’t excessive - they are required by law. They exist because sodium fluoride is still recognized for what it has always been: a highly toxic industrial chemical.

For much of the mid-20th century, fluoride was promoted almost as if it were an essential nutrient - something our bodies need for strong teeth, much like calcium for bones or vitamin D for healthy growth.

In the 1950s, some public health officials even spoke of a supposed “fluoride deficiency,” suggesting that cavities were the result of too little fluoride in the diet. This idea quickly took root, and fluoride was widely accepted as necessary for health.

But as scientific understanding advanced, this claim unraveled. Decades of research by major health authorities failed to identify any essential biological role for fluoride in the human body:

“Sodium fluoride used for therapeutic effect would be a drug, not a mineral nutrient. Fluoride has not been determined essential to human health.” - FDA 1963

“In summary, FDA does not list fluorine as an essential nutrient.” - FDA 1990

“Fluoride is not an essential nutrient… there was no evidence that we require it for growth, development, or any normal metabolic process.” - U.S. National Research Council (NRC) 1989 & 1993

By the early 2000s, even public health agencies had backed away from describing fluoride as “nutritional”:

“The amount of fluoride stored in tooth enamel is not what determines cavity risk.” - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2001

“Fluoride is not a nutrient and is not required for any biological function in the body.” - World Health Organization (WHO)

The defense of fluoride almost always rests on one claim: it’s dangerous at high levels, but safe in small amounts. This “dose makes the poison” argument has been repeated for decades to justify its place in toothpaste and drinking water.

But it overlooks two critical truths:

1. Fluoride is not essential to the body. As mentioned above, health authorities themselves admit this. It is not a vitamin, not a mineral, and not a nutrient in any sense. There is no such thing as “fluoride deficiency.” No disease, not even cavities, comes from not having enough fluoride. Strong teeth and good health are fully possible without ever ingesting it.

2. Lowering the dose doesn’t eliminate the risk. A chemical that corrodes, poisons, and kills at high levels does not suddenly become harmless at low ones. Toxicity is not a light switch… it exists on a spectrum. Dilution may reduce the danger, but it does not erase it.

Which brings us to the obvious question: If the human body has no biological requirement for fluoride, why take on any risk at all? Why normalize exposing people, and especially children whose bodies are still developing and more vulnerable, to daily doses of an industrial byproduct?

In any other area of health, the idea of giving infants and children trace amounts of a hazardous chemical every single day would be unthinkable. Yet through decades of repetition and reassurance, fluoride has been reframed as “good public health.”

The history of fluoride in public health is not the story of science discovering a biological need. It’s a story of marketing reshaping perception. Fluorosilicic acid, once labeled as a corrosive industrial pollutant, is now poured into tap water. Sodium fluoride, once packaged and sold as rat poison, is now brushed into children’s teeth. The compounds themselves didn’t change. They weren’t purified or transformed into something safer. What changed was the story. Industrial waste was rebranded as prevention.

The truth may feel uncomfortable, but it is also liberating. When we set aside assumptions and look honestly at the evidence, fluoride can be seen for what it is…and what it is not. From there, we can move toward a model of health grounded in truth, nourishment, and respect for the human body.

Practical Steps for Families

• Toothpaste: Choose fluoride-free for the entire family. Infants and young children are most at risk because they often swallow toothpaste, but adults are not exempt. Daily, lifelong exposure adds up. Fluoride-free toothpaste, along with proper brushing and a nutrient-dense diet, is enough to maintain healthy teeth.

• Water: If your tap water is fluoridated, always filter it before drinking or cooking. A reverse osmosis (RO) system is one of the most effective options, and trusted spring water that’s been verified for low contaminants is another safe option.

Parting Note:

Fluoride is a drug —not a nutrient— and should be regarded that way. Like nitroglycerin for chest pain, it can manage symptoms but never corrects the disease itself. Studies now link prenatal and childhood BPA exposure to neuro-developmental disorders like anxiety, hyperactivity, and inattention - effects that can last well into adulthood. Even low levels raise the risks of heart disease later in life.

Lead tells a similar story. Once brushed off as harmless in small amounts, it is now recognized as one of the most dangerous toxins for children. Even trace exposure through pigments or drinking water lowers IQ, damages brain development, and fuels behavioral problems. No safe level exists.

The lesson is simple: what seems like “a little exposure,” repeated hundreds of times a year, adds up. Brushing twice daily means 730 chances for chemicals to enter the bloodstream, every single year.

Why This Matters

The mouth is not just the entryway for food. It is one of the most efficient drug-delivery systems in the human body, absorbing substances faster than skin.

When oral care products contain questionable or toxic ingredients, in a system where companies are not required to prove safety first, the risk isn’t theoretical. It’s real.

What you brush with isn’t just cleaning your teeth. It’s feeding your bloodstream and your organs.

What Are Cosmetics?

Under U.S. law, cosmetics are products applied to the body for cleansing, beautifying, or altering appearance, without affecting the body’s structure or function.

This includes toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo, deodorant, lotion, sunscreen, and makeup.

In other words, the very products you and your family use multiple times a day, every single day.

A Law Frozen In Time

Cosmetics in the U.S. are still regulated by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938.

To put that in perspective:

• It was written before World War II.

• Before most modern chemicals even existed

• Long before scientists could measure the effects of low-dose, repeated exposures

Out of more than 100 pages devoted to food and drug regulations, cosmetics are only given a single page. More than eighty years later, almost nothing has changed.

The FDA Loophole

Here’s what few people realize:

Unlike food or drugs, cosmetics do not require FDA approval before being sold.

That means:

• No mandatory pre-market safety testing of products.

• No independent review of formulas or ingredients.

• No proof of safety before a product touches your skin or enters your mouth.

The toothpaste in your bathroom and the lotion on your child’s skin? Chances are, they’ve never been reviewed or tested for safety at all.

The Illusion of Oversight

Surely, you might assume there are some protections in place.

There are. But they’re entirely voluntary and run by the cosmetic industry itself.

• Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program (VCRP): Optional.

• Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR): Funded by the cosmetic industry.

• Personal Care Product Council (PCPC): An industry trade group with no regulatory power.

The result?

• Of 12,500+ ingredients in use, fewer than 20% have ever been reviewed for safety

• Only 9 ingredients have been declared unsafe

• The FDA bans just 11 more

For comparison, the European Union bans or restricts over 1,300 ingredients.

Why This Matters

Exposure to cosmetic products isn’t once in a while- it’s daily, lifelong, and cumulative.

Think of brushing your teeth: twice a day, every day, for decades. One exposure may seem insignificant, but repeat it thousands of times over a lifetime, and even small exposures to chemicals add up and can influence long-term health.

Children are especially vulnerable:

• Their bodies are still developing

• Their detox systems are immature

• They often swallow toothpaste while learning to brush

What looks harmless in small amounts can be far more dangerous when repeated for years.

The Takeaway is Clear

Just because a product is on a store shelf does not mean it’s been tested or proven safe.

Until U.S. standards are improved, the responsibility remains with us as consumers to protect our health by reading labels, examining ingredients, and choosing products carefully.

What You Can Do Today

1. Read Labels: If you don’t recognize an ingredient, research it. Over time, you’ll learn which ones you’re comfortable with and which to avoid.

2. Look Beyond U.S. Standards: Consider buying cosmetic products made by brands that meet stricter safety laws, such as those in the European Union or Canada.

3. Start Small: You don’t need to replace everything at once. Begin with the products you and your children use most frequently, like toothpaste.

What started as a way to win on the field soon became a deep fascination with nutrition and its power to transform health. That same enthusiasm later led me to a pre-med track and, ultimately, to dentistry.

So I opened my own practice in Austin, Texas. Here, I take time with patients, learning about their diet, lifestyle, and habits. I focus on education - helping people understand how their daily choices shape both their oral and overall health.

Still, I found there was more I wanted to share than could fit into a single appointment. That’s why I began writing - a way to offer patients, and anyone interested, a resource they can return to again and again.

My goal here is simple: every week, I’ll share a newsletter with the same goal I have in the clinic: to give you the tools and knowledge to support your health for life.
